What is Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine has a long tradition in this country and around the world. Over the centuries many traditions have developed within different cultures throwing up a variety of practices today. The folk traditions of “cures” and the apprenticeship tradition of training in the footsteps of a master have evolved to the modern herbalist who undergoes a rigorous training within a professional training course. Herbalism has served the community in a continuity which has survived and thrived through a time which has seen considerable change and development in allopathic and pharmaceutical based medicine. So far medical herbalism has retained the unique practice of formulating a unique treatment for each client as distinct from the purchase of over the counter pre-prepared medicines for minor self limiting conditions. This puts the trained Medical Herbalist in the position of being able to prescribe herbal remedies in relation to the unique health needs of the individual client based on long tradition of use, professional training, and clinical experience.
